Did you see the camo's critter? Here are some better photos of him. He still has white on his back feet and belly but the majority of him is brown now. I hope he sticks around for a while - without eating all of the plants.
I spy with my little eye... I snapped a few pictures of this critter as it scurried across the lawn. It was hard to see when he was in the brush but I got a few good ones when he came back out onto the lawn and again the next morning.
Dad, Hubby and I headed into the woods last weekend to look for some turkey sign as well as see if we could find some sheds. It was a beautiful afternoon and we took our time enjoying the run and the start of some green grass. As soon as we got out of the car, we saw deer tracks - and some pretty nice looking ones. We headed up to the Sky Condo and down through the woods to T3. We were maybe 10 steps into the woods when Dad stopped and pointed - four, maybe five flags bounced through the trees and away from us. We were glad to see that they were starting to spread out again and break away from their yarding areas and they looked healthy. We spread out to cover more ground and kept looking for a shed or two. If you were out in the woods and saw this, would you be able to know it was chaga right away? I was lucky that I had Robin with me and she was able to point it out with 100% certainty of what it was. She was also on top of things and brought a saw to get it off the tree. It was a beautiful, somewhat windy day and we got out in snowshoes before it got too sloppy and slushy. It was almost hot when the wind died down. Chaga We took two pieces off of the tree and went in search of more, which we did not find. I am hoping to keep working on my ability to identify this in the woods when I am out now but it may take a time or two before I am totally confident in my...
When some blogs just talked about opening day of fishing season, Robin Follette and I LIVED it! I drove four hours north the day before to hang out with Robin and go on a few adventures (those posts are coming, but here is a sneak peek). The biggest was to stand in the Stream in Grand Lake Stream on opening day and try our hand at fly fishing. We didn't really care about catching a fish but we were excited to see the groups of people that would be there and the excitement surrounding the beginning of fishing season. We met up with Brian Donaghy of Epic Adventures to help us with gear and guidance. When we pulled into the parkinglot, we saw Brian and only 4 or 5 other vehicles. This was not the crowded fishing...
It is always fun to see a Bald Eagle, especially when you least expect it. I found this bird sitting in a tree, being carefully watched by two crows. It was a cold morning - around 5 degrees, so when I rolled my window down the heat from inside the car escaped and created a blurry look to the pictures. I wasn't willing to get out of the car in case the bird flew.
The forecast calls for 20-25 inches coming my way this weekend. That storm will mean that we have seen almost 6 feet of snow in the past 3 weeks. It has snowed about every other day. I think everyone who pays attention to the deer herd is watching and hoping that the lack of snow early on in the winter allowed for the deer to store up more fat and get more food to be able to survive 6 feet of snow in such a short time. Dad and I checked on 'our deer' while our snowmobiling Last spring the turkey season was eliminated from Northern Maine because of the snow fall amounts and concern over the breeding success rates. Living in a state that can get slammed by Mother Nature, keeps you on your toes. We obsess over...
...is this! Sent to me by one of the coolest people I know. Do you know what it is? It's chaga! I was going to make a concentrate during the snow storm but I made venison stew in my crockpot instead. I am eager to break it down to drink in my coffee and tea. I have had it before and loved it. I am so excited to try making it on my own - and then, I need to work on identifying it in the woods so that I can continue to get it. Do you drink...
It was cold, but the sun was out and Dad, Hubby and I were eager to go into the woods to look at where T3 will be set up, bring in a couple of tree stands and I wanted to look for sheds. The recent dusting of snow helped to see any new deer tracks. It also helped to see the main trails and activity of the deer herd. There were a lot of spots that looked like this. The deer have been on an acorn frenzy and since there is not a lot of snow, they can still paw at the ground and leaves to find them. Deer paw for acorns buried along the leaves and snow. I tracked a couple of deer from the Sky Condo as we made our way to my treeseat where I shot my deer this year. It is always amazing and kind of frustrating to...
