Do I need to worry about ticks?

If you have read this blog for any period of time, you know how much I love deer ticks.  As I head out for turkey season in a couple of weeks… how concerned do I need to be about those little blood suckers coming after me?  (Rabid, Duck Hunter…)

I have the Doctor’s ok to wear deet from my knees down and I bet I could spray clothing or a blanket and put it over me… but as I am BRAND new to turkey hunting, I need some help with how prepared I should be.

  1. I tuck my pants into my Woody Max. Nothing ever gets in.

You obviously won't be belly crawling through the grass to see over a rise this year but for future reference, snug sleeves tucked into gloves helps.

    • I could be in a bubble suit and they would still get to me. Will they be out this early?

  2. Let me just say that deer ticks are nothing to take lightly. I have been struggling with lyme disease and the medical problems brought on by such for many years now. For example I am only 50 and I have to have my hips replaced because of arthritis that has been brought on by lyme disease so with that being said PROTECT YOURSELF with whatever works and constantly check yourself whenever you go outdoors.

  3. We use a product called "REPEL" which has Deet but what we like about it is once you spray your clothes and boots down with it, it will stay in your clothes up to 10 washings so you don't have to keep re-applying. They advise you to NOT spray it on your body.

We use it and then tuck in all shirt tails and pant legs. We stay chigger and deer tick free during our Spring and Fall hunts. Chiggers are our kryptonite, not so much the deer ticks.

We get Repel from our local Walmart but you can get it on-line too.

    GOOD LUCK HUNTING!!!

Opening day in the woods

Welcome back! Saturday kicked off Maine's rifle season for deer hunting and I made a point of sitting in my stand for the whole day.  I packed a lunch, some water and snacks and climbed up at 6am.  It was a perfect day to be in the woods.  The sun was...

Trail camera mystery critter

When we pulled the memory card a week or so ago, we saw this picture.  Nothing before and nothing after, just this one glimpse in time.  I posted it on my Facebook page and got some great comments about what it could be.  What are your thoughts?
