Snowshowing in the sun

Have you ever looked up at the sky and marveled at how blue it was? There was not a cloud up there when Staci and I packed up our snowshoes and headed into the woods to look for sheds.

The recent rain had made the snow unstable and we would break through the crust and sink with every step.  It wasn’t the best option, but we ended up on the snowmobile trail looking for active deer crossings.   Wet holes had opened up and streams were roaring.  It was a perfect day to be out in the woods.

The rain had made some spots icy and some soft and water logged.  We had to pick and chose where we walked and how fast we could go.  I was surprised when we met three snowmobilers on the trail.  They were probably surprised to see us too because they stopped to make sure that we were all set and had not broken down somewhere.  We continued on and as soon as we reached the tree line, we spotted two deer beds – ALWAYS a good sign.

We followed the tracks and decided to head west and see if we could find more deer sign and maybe even a shed!

We found tracks and lots of animal poop.  We found Witch’s Jelly.  We followed the tracks down into a ravine and across a stream.  Then we got distracted.  We found these tracks and neither of us knew what would make them – a fisher maybe? if it was running?  They were horseshoe shaped and anywhere from 8 inches to 12/14 inches long depending on how close together they were.  Do you have any ideas?

You never know what you might find in the woods and that’s the exciting part! We never did find a shed, but I won’t give up!  If I can make it out there before the snow disappear and the ticks come out, maybe I will be lucky and find one.

Step 3: Boil, Baby, Boil

After talking about it for a few weeks, I actually took my antlers back to my house and boiled them. It was a nice, sunny day. I had my grill going and everything was working well. The wind put out the burner a couple of times, but I re-lit it. However, when I ran out...

Same big buck? You tell me!

I have been going back and forth between these photos from last hunting season and the ones below.  Is it the same deer?  The photos are off my two months (Sept vs Nov) but are we looking at the same deer?  It looks like the same antler frame and maybe...

A little spring walk

Dad, Hubby and I headed into the woods last weekend to look for some turkey sign as well as see if we could find some sheds.  It was a beautiful afternoon and we took our time enjoying the run and the start of some green grass. As soon as we got out of the car,...
