Less than 2 months!!!!

‘Til opening day of deer season!

I know a bunch of people who are out in the woods this week looking for bears and moose season starts in a couple of weeks… but I am counting down the days til the whitetail and I come face to face (or scope to face).

The more I think about it, the more I want to get done before Oct 27th! Dad and I have a new spot with a new seat in it and I want to hang out there for a couple of hours to get use to it. I never realized how familiar a spot feels until you spend countless hours there. By the time I shot my deer last year, I had spent 76 hours in the woods. I knew where the gray squirrels would come from (direction and tree) and I knew what the normal sounds were and what were not.

I have written about my hunting spots before and so far, we have shot a deer from each tree stand and my tree seat. The pressure is on for this 4th spot.

Also, as Dad and I walk into the woods this fall, we will be celebrating 10 years of being hunting partners. So much as happened since that first trip in the woods with him and as the season gets closer and starts, I am excited to write about the new adventures and some really good (and funny) old ones.

Are you excited about the upcoming season? Are you already in the woods?

  1. My hunting partner and I have been hunting together for 23 years, before we were even married. We went out to the prairie to scout antelope and deer last weekend. It was so fun sitting in our lawn chairs with our binoculars just watching the world go by and visiting. Hopefully one of us gets an antelope as it is my favorite meat.

  2. Antelope… is that more like deer or moose meat?

It is so relaxing and almost zen like to be sitting outside in a stand and just being in nature. Getting a deer is fantastic too, but its my time to reconnect outside.

  3. I will be excited, but i could be more excited. between work and finishing school, and my 16 month old, i've not had a lot of time to spend the summer scouting like I would…to me that is such a big part of the season. to strap on the hiking gear and comb the mountain sides for signs and putting cams out. I can only assume i'll not have much time for the actual hunting as well. so i'll do what I can, when I can…but it will all be about being "lucky," this year!!! At any rate, Autmn and winter is my favorite times of year, fall foilage, good hunting, fishing, and seasonal beers.

  4. There's a lot of comfort in knowing the sounds of the woods, what lives there, what will happen from week to week as the season changes.

76 hours – two weeks worth of time at a full time job. I'd be hard pressed to think of more enjoyable time. I'll be some where on opening day, wishing for a nice buck but knowing it's unlikely in my part of Maine. Can't wait! Good luck this year! Can't wait to see your pics.

  5. 🙂 I am having a hard time not just SHOOTING the darn deer in my garden. Grrrr.

More Coyote stuff

As a funny follow up to Steve's blog about coyots, I was going through photos for my Dad's album (every year that we get a deer, I add more pictures) and found these. Dad found this deer last year when he was out walking around and I was in my seat. It was, as you can...

Where are the women?

This week, my interview with Steve at The Maine Outdoorsman went live. Steve said yesterday 200 people hit his site viewing over 500 pages. That is a lot of people reading about little ole me and hunting. Why? When I think of women who are in the general public's eye...

The joys of being a female hunter

Someday, in my dreams, there will be a store full of outdoor clothing.  Deer hunting, turkey hunting, fishing… a store full of every possible article of clothing that you could possibly need.  Blaze orange, camo, base layers and outter layers… it will all be...
